After the September 10, 2024, meeting a text message was circulated with incomplete information and without proper context. It was stated that the local sent out personal information without consent. The reality of the situation is that the union collects information on a voluntary basis from members for use in conducting official union business to include member updates most importantly conduct elections as required by law. The information (names and addresses) was sent out to the company which prepared and mailed out the ballots for the delegate election, which is legitimate union business. This information was omitted in the text message allegation for unknown reasons, as the election was the topic of discussion when this question arose. The company used is STANNP.COM, a reputable corporation. Below is a link to the company as well as their privacy policy.
In that same text, a reference was made about expelling a member from the meeting. This was not done, but a warning, as the member persisted in shouting out of turn in the meeting and disrupting the business on the floor. Removal is an option for maintaining order in the meetings utilized in a manner consistent with the AFGE Code of Conduct. It should be expected that the membership meeting will be conducted in an orderly manner, providing equal time and respect for any member wishing to bring points to the floor. Shouting and outbursts are not part of that process. In the end, the member was not removed, it was only asked that proper decorum be observed.
Finally, it was stated that a board member voted for themselves to attend convention. The larger discussion surrounded allowing membership to participate in the observer process. The fact of the matter is the position of delegate was open to any eligible member and decided by the election. There were only 6 people who stepped forward showing interest, and only 5 eligible for election. Three delegates were elected, the remainder were alternates as defined by the AFGE constitution. All members who took an interest in participating were in turn taken based on the outcome of the election and their status as alternate delegates.
